Experience the wonder of ancient Greece with History Off the Page, bringing fifth century BC Athens to life in your
school. History Off the Page provides valuable learning opportunities to the pupils through a combination of role-play,
practical activities and hands on experience with facsimile artefacts. The hall will become the Agora in Athens, participants
will be traders, craftsmen etc. who will be busy at their tasks while sharing all the latest gossip.
Setting
490 BC. The battle of Marathon. The pupils will take the roles of Athenian citizens and slaves at the time of the battle of
Marathon. From the safety of the Agora, the pupils will await news of the outcome, discussing the events that led to this
pivotal date in Greek history..
Workshops
History off the Page will bring all the equipment and materials needed to set up workshops in your hall. The school needs to
provide tables and adult supervisors. The atmosphere will be created by using drama and role-play, facsimile items and the
sort of materials which were used by the Ancient Greeks. The tables will be covered to protect them. The workshops
normally include:
- Testing oil lamps
- The sons and daughters of Asklepius
- Charm bags
- Fresco painting
- Wax tablets
- Neck bands
- Painting pottery
- Potters
- Handling and drawing authentic facsimile artefacts
- Mosaics
Afternoon Session
Afternoon
During this session, the pupils will experience a Greek theatre. The afternoon is divided into the following sessions:
- Working in groups to prepare for the theatre (25 - 30 minutes)
- The Greek theatre event (Food will be served and there will be
performances by the children taking the roles of actors, dancers and
soldier athletes. The school will need to provide simple food.)
- A review of the day
Details of this and further information about the day are included in a
booklet which is sent out prior to a booking. All the History Off the Page
providers are experienced teachers who enjoy working with large groups
of children. Generally there will be at least one story told during the day.
