History Key Stage 2 ~ Life in Roman Britain

Experience the wonder of ancient Rome with History Off the Page who willtake up to 90 children and recreate life in first century Roman Britain in your school. History Off the Page provides valuable learning opportunities for the pupils through a combination of role-play, practical activities and hands on experience with facsimile artefacts. The hall will become the villa near a Roman occupied town where the children will be busy working as apprentices, learning, making and trading crafts whilst sharing all the latest gossip as Romano-Britons.

Setting

60 AD the Boudican revolt. The pupils will take the roles of Roman citizens and slaves during the Boudican revolt. From their villa, the pupils will await news of the outcome, discussing the events that led to this dangerous time in the history of Roman occupied Britain.

Workshops

History Off the Page will bring all the equipment and materials needed to set up workshops in your hall. The school needs to provide tables and adult supervisors for each workshop. The tables will be covered to protect them.

The workshops normally include: Testing oil lamps, Charm bags, Fresco painting, Wax tablets, Ink making, Beauticians, Potters, Herbalists, Mosaics, Jewellers.

The drama of the day will be created by the participants being in costume and the use of roleplay, the facsimile items, tools and materials upon the tables. In addition there will be merchants who will ‘sell’ their wares to the workshops and ‘buy’ the crafts, thereby encouraging the children to produce quality work and to barter.

The morning often ends with a storytelling session.

Banquet

During the afternoon session the pupils will experience a symposium, which will celebrate the Roman victory over the Boudican rebels. The afternoon has the following sessions:

  • Preparing for the banquet
  • Having the banquet (Food will be served by slaves and includes performances by the children taking the roles of actors, dancers and soldier-athletes. The school will need to provide a small amount of simple food.)

Details of this and further information about the day are included in a booklet which is sent out prior to a booking. All the History Off the Page providers are experienced teachers who enjoy working with large groups of children.

Costumes are available to order from Off the Peg.
