| History Key Stage 2 ~
The Vikings |
The Vikings are coming with History Off the Page! HOP will take up to 90 children and recreate life in ninth
century Britain in your school.
History Off the Page provides valuable learning opportunities for the pupils through a combination of role-play,
practical activities and hands on experience with facsimile artefacts. The hall will become the marketplace of a
Viking village, participants will be traders, craftsmen etc. who will be busy at their tasks while sharing all the latest
gossip.
Setting
The day will focus on the Battle of Eddington in AD 878.
Workshops
History Off the Page will bring all the equipment and materials needed to set up workshops in your hall. The school
needs to provide tables and adult supervisors. The atmosphere will be created by
using drama and role-play, facsimile items etc. The tables will be covered to
protect them. The workshops normally include:
- Preparing cures with the wise woman.
- Making ink for the monks and testing it.
- Making amulets.
- Dyeing and weaving.
- Dipping beeswax candles.
- Working with clay.
- Illuminating using oxides.
- Casting.
- Making braid headbands.
- Making stitched tie bags and runic stones.
Archaeological Investigation
During the afternoon session, the pupils continue to explore the history of Viking
communities in Britain by re-visiting the Viking village over a 1,000 years later.
Using the ‘dig boxes’ pupils are encouraged to develop their investigative skills,
becoming historical detectives and setting up a museum.
Details of this and further information about the day are included in a booklet which
is sent out prior to a booking. All the History Off the Page providers are experienced
teachers and storytellers who enjoy working with large groups of children.
