Music is an important tool to be used in all areas of
child development. As well as gaining practical skills as outlined below, a
child may also become more confident, more self aware, better coordinated
and more able to work as a team. Concentration and communication skills are
improved.
Non-specialists sometimes feel inadequate since they possess little or no
musical skill themselves. In these cases, activities need to build
confidence within teachers in order for them to become aware of their own
potential. The sessions I lead aim to enable teachers to experiment with
some new ideas, in order to pass on these skills to children. Even music
specialists will enjoy receiving some new material. Together, I hope that a
whole school approach can be developed, rather than leaving music as a
specialist subject to be taught by specialist teachers.
Through singing, musical games, the use of instruments and listening, the
five key areas of music are explored. The children have, hopefully, had lots
of pre-school experience of action songs and moving to music. These
activities aim to build on this experience, filling in gaps and extending
their skills. Careful and thoughtful use of instruments is always advocated.
Instruments are not always necessary, the most important musical tool the
children possess is the voice and this can be explored to the full.
