Five separate courses are offered for INSET on science and the
environment. Theses are:
UNIT 1: The School environment. Utilising the school environment
as a resource for flora, fauna and associated research. Design and
building wildlife areas, including copse, pond, wildflower meadow with
seating, shade, study areas and integrated exciting trails.
UNIT 2: Rocks. A whole or part day study of rocks using basic
equipment and fun. This has been designed on a workshop style basis with
approximately 12 different working areas e.g. erosion, fossils,
classification, permeability.
UNIT 3: Food Chains. Using barn owl pellets in the first
instance, to work out feeding patterns - predators and prey. This is
then developed into cross-curricular work.
UNIT 4: Recording scientific information. Recording from a
looking/finding/collecting trip in a nature reserve, local park and even
the school grounds. Using close observational work, using clay, simple
printing techniques, photography, photograms and natural dyes.
UNIT 5: Working outdoors. Working and organisation with children
out of doors, simple equipment and use, the 'unnatural' trail - and
similar devices to aid ‘looking’ development. Specific areas of study
include pond-life, birds, trees and plants.
In all cases clear, manageable methods will be shown and tried,
classroom organisation addressed, resources and equipment recommended.
The sessions are informal, practical and relaxed, and offer a wealth of
stimulating and exciting ideas for the specialist and non-specialist
alike.
