The Mayans

Our newest topic is offered as a virtual workshop only.

Meet Izel, a priestess from the Mayan city off Chichen Itza. The area’s farmers want to ensure a bountiful harvest, so the community prepares to make a sacrifice to the Rain God Chaac. Will Chaac be pleased?

The topics covered during the workshop include:

  • Mayan beliefs, rituals and ceremonies
  • Everyday life as a Mayan
  • The Mayan calendar
  • The role of chocolate in Mayan culture

How Does the Workshop Work?

Our virtual workshops consist of two key elements:

  • Individual activities kits for each child in your group.
  • A pre-recorded video made by our knowledgeable teachers.

The workshops take place in your own room at your own pace – we give you access to the video for several days, so you can rewind, replay, or break up the activities as you see fit.

Most schools find that the workshops fill half a day, although you can spread them out as you see fit.

For a small additional fee, you can add an optional hour of “live” teaching time with one of our qualified teachers. This extra time, which takes place via video conferencing software, offers extra engagement to the day and allows the children to probe further into the learning.

What Activities are Included?

The items include fresco painting on modroc, a paper headdress with feathers, a small clay pot, a foil necklace, soap carvings of Mayan figures and Mayan writing on tree bark.
Objects children will make during the virtual Mayan workshop.

As mentioned, each child receives an activities kit to match the video. The school needs to provide a few basic supplies such as PVA glue, scissors, and pencils, but otherwise the children receive the necessary materials to make six projects:

  • A sample of temple painting
  • Mayan writing on tree bark
  • A soap carving of Mayan symbols
  • A necklace
  • A headdress
  • A coiled clay pot

The workshop also comes with an information booklet for teachers, which details the learning outcomes, extra supplies that might be needed and possible follow-up learning.

How Do I Book a Workshop?

Please contact us by form, e-mail or telephone. Let us know the week you would like to use the workshop, and whether you would like the optional live teaching time.

Since the virtual workshops do not depend on our diary, you may order them at anytime. (But do allow enough time for delivery!)

Do You Offer an In-School Version of the Workshop?

Sadly, no. Our new virtual format has made it possible for us to explore new topics we might not otherwise be able to offer. We have had many requests for Mayans over the years, and we are pleased we can finally offer it in this way.
